Tell the Maine PUC: Stand Up for Tribal Sovereignty and Rooftop Solar!
The Passamaquoddy Tribe at Motahkmikuk (Indian Township) has a $7.4 million federal grant to put rooftop solar panels on more than 200 homes and community buildings. Each family would have its own small system and battery backup, cutting electricity costs, addressing the community’s significant energy burdens, and building energy independence for the future.
But the local monopoly utility, Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative — joined by other Maine utilities — is trying to block the project. Their main concern is protecting profits, even if that comes at the expense of the Tribe’s right to control its own energy. If regulators side with them, it could prevent not only the Tribe but also other Maine communities from lowering bills with their own solar projects.
A decision by the Public Utilities Commission has not yet been made, but we are encouraged by the recent recommendation of PUC staff. Please join Our Power in supporting the position of the Wabanaki Alliance, the Governor’s Energy Office, environmental and renewables groups, and others!
