Our society depends on electricity to function and the system providing this core part of modern life can seem complex. It’s easy to take it for granted and let the experts handle the details.

But if we want reliable, affordable, and clean electricity for everyone, we need to know where our power comes from, how it’s delivered, how the grid is regulated, and what choices and options we have for improving things.

Everyone should have a say in how this system is developed and managed.

Our Power educates and engages citizens to help de-mystify our electrical grid and inspire folks to see themselves not mere “ratepayers” but as active participants and stakeholders.

It’s up to individual states how they want to regulate their electric utilities. Like most states, Maine has a special group or “commission” overseeing these protected monopolies. The customers, or “ratepayers,” need to push for what’s in the public’s best interest through elections, lobbying, and actively participating in hearings or proceedings.
